There could be clues everywhere about who they are and what their purpose is.You could take this concept as far as you wanted to really. That way as you walk them through their adventure they can learn about the world. So they have gained consciousness for the first time and are floating in a tub of 'gel-slime' substance (sort of Matrix like) with no memories.in some weird facility on some planet somewhere - maybee deep underground a hive in a secret lab. but something went wrong in the lab facility and the memory implants did not gel properly (maybee Chaos had an inside agent in the lab that fouled things up.) you could also have them play characters who have been bio genetically constructed and engineered - sort like a Space Marine (but they were constructed for some other purpose less 'Kill Everything'. 'If' they really know absolutely nothing about the 40k world. Sure, it involves them doing a little homework, but it's a whole lot less than reading an entire novel. They're bound to get curious and read a bit about the setting while they're art browsing, and even if they don't, you've at least given them a visual reference.

The setting is so big, so insanely over the top in places that I think seeing art is the only way to "get" some aspects of 40k.Īnother option would be to have your players go to, check out their "Specialist Games" section, download the rulebooks for Inquisitor, Necromunda, and Battlefleet Gothic (they're free!), and tell them to browse through and look at the art.
